The 1897 Arizona Normal Normals football team was an American football team that represented the Arizona Normal School (later renamed Arizona State University) as an independent during the 1897 college football season. In its first season of varsity football, the Tempe Normal team compiled a (0-1) record. Tempe Normal's team captain was Walter Shute. The Normals finished (1-0) at home and (0-0) on the road. All home games were played at Normal Field in Tempe, Arizona.

The Tempe Normal football program was organized by Frederick M. Irish who came to Arizona Normal School in 1896 as a science teacher after graduating from the University of Iowa. He remained the football coach at Tempe Normal for the first eight seasons of its existence.

Season Summary

In the first ever football game in school history, Tempe Normal fell to the Phoenix Indians 38-20 at Normal Field. This marked the first ever meeting between the teams in school history.

Tempe Normal's roster included: (HB Worthy Bellamy, T Crantz Cartledge, E Ben Hicks, G W. Phelps, T Jim Power, G C. Redden, C M. Redden, Walter Shute, QB Clyde Stewart, & E Billy Woolf).
